Homelessness Week 2022
Homelessness Week 2022
1-7 August 2022
What is Homelessness Week?
Homelessness Week is an annual campaign coordinated by Homelessness Australia. It is an opportunity to bring the issues of homelessness into the spotlight, as well as the actions needed to achieve lasting solutions.
In Australia there are over 116,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night.
Homelessness Week aims to raise awareness of the impact of homelessness on Australia through national and local events, as well as providing information on the importance of housing as a solution and educating communities on how they can make a difference.
The theme for Homelessness Week 2022 is: To end homelessness we need a plan.
Homelessness is more than just ‘rooflessness’, housing is more than just shelter. A home provides a sense of security, stability, privacy and safety, and is a foundation to living a healthy life.
Homelessness can profoundly affect a person’s mental and physical health, their education and employment opportunities, and their ability to fully participate in society. Not having a stable, safe and secure home makes it harder for individuals to find and maintain a job, stay healthy and maintain relationships, which leads to people becoming socially isolated.
The main causes of homelessness are poverty, lack of affordable housing, and family violence. Over half of people presenting at support services cite family violence or relationship breakdown as a reason for seeking help.
