Addressing issues of homelessness
The Early Morning Centre (EMC) is a community hub supporting Canberra people who are experiencing, or at risk of experiencing homelessness, and those experiencing social isolation.
The EMC is a safe, respectful and welcoming space where guests can access essential services, support and community activities. At the EMC, we focus on our guests’ individual needs.
We offer a free, hot nutritious breakfast five days a week, prepared and served by our volunteers. We also provide essential services and facilities including showers, lockers and computers with internet access. In addition to this, we facilitate healthcare services, accommodation support and community activities. You can click here to view our services and activities.
At the EMC, we understand that ‘homelessness’ is more than just ‘rooflessness’. A home provides a sense of security, stability, privacy and safety.

The EMC is a project of the Canberra City Uniting Church, supported by the ACT Government, Social Housing and Homelessness Services.
Our mission is to address issues faced by people who are
- experiencing homelessness
- at risk of experiencing homelessness, or
- experiencing social isolation.
- positive connections
- respect, and
- a fulfilling life for our guests, staff and volunteers.
Our vision is a fuller life for our guests; people who are experiencing homelessness, at risk of experiencing homelessness or experiencing social isolation. We achieve this goal by providing a safe space for connection, support and growth.
A fuller life for guests will be achieved through five objectives:
- Better experience of homelessness with access to essential services for guests.
- Building better life skills for guests.
- Improved social connection for guests.
- Better physical and mental health for guests.
- Sustainable approach to the EMC’s organisation.
We acknowledge the way the traditional owners have cared for this land from time immemorial and commit ourselves to building more just ways of living together with the First Peoples of this land.
